Man arrested after pharmacy employee alerts police

A Gary man was arrested after police found guns and drugs inside the vehicle.

Davion LeVonte Merritt, 20, 1134 Pyramid Drive, was arrested on a charge of theft, carrying a handgun without a license, possession of methamphetamine, possession of a synthetic drug and possession of a controlled substance.

A sheriff’s deputy stopped the vehicle Merritt was driving near County Line and Peterman roads after it left a nearby pharmacy. The deputy had pulled into the pharmacy parking lot, and an employee said Merritt had been hiding in the shadows and looking inside the building, and he was worried Merritt was going to rob the place, according to the report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found two guns, including one reported stolen, a bag of what appeared to be synthetic marijuana, a bag of methamphetamine and prescription cough syrup with Codeine in a large, unmarked bottle, the report said.

Merritt told police the only item in the vehicle that was his was a backpack with clothing, the report said. Otherwise, Merritt declined to talk with police, the report said.

Merritt was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail and was held on $5,800 bond.
