In addition to orange barrels and construction workers on your main commuting routes, you can expect to find them in local neighborhoods and streets.
The county and Franklin are getting ready to begin work on their road maintenance and paving projects, which include some main routes, such as Westview Drive in Franklin and Olive Branch and Fairview roads in the unincorporated White River Township area. In addition, the county has a list of more than 30 subdivisions in the Center Grove area where work is being done.

In total, the county is spending more than $3 million on road paving, rejuvenating and chip-sealing, and Franklin is spending more than $1 million. The money comes from state funding, which is partially collected from what residents pay in fuel taxes, and also the wheel tax, which residents pay when registering their vehicles.

Officials from both communities use a similar ranking system that determines when roads are in need of work.
Franklin began using the system about four years ago, and officials decide what roads should be paved based on their rating in the spring, city engineer Travis Underhill said.
The Johnson County Highway Department reviews and ranks each of the roads in the county and determines which will be repaved or repaired, highway director Luke Mastin said.
Some of those roads will be repaved, but some will also be preserved using a process called chip-seal where a mixture of oil and rock is put over the surface of the road to make it last longer.
But the county also spends some of its budget each year to repair roads in subdivisions, mainly in the Center Grove area. This year, the county is fixing roads in multiple neighborhoods across the Center Grove area, including Eldorado, Brentridge Estates, Brookstone, Wakefield and Cedar Hills.
Crews began some of the county’s smaller paving projects at the end of July, but the bulk of the work will take place in August and September, Mastin said.
In Franklin, paving is set to begin in the next couple weeks, Underhill said.
