Man arrested after Greenwood robbery

A man was arrested after police said he stole multiple items from a Greenwood gas station.

Michael D. Barker, 32, 4137 S. State St., Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of robbery, theft, criminal confinement, possession of a narcotic, possession of paraphernalia and driving while suspended with a prior conviction.

Greenwood police were called to the Circle K gas station, off Worthsville Road near Interstate 65, just after 3 a.m. Wednesday.

The clerk told police Barker had come in and bought lottery tickets and other small items and talked with him for more than an hour. Then, Barker told him he was going to take more items and began packing food, alcohol and other merchandise into garbage bags, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

Barker took the items out to his vehicle on multiple trips, and had told another customer inside the store not to leave and instead to help carry stolen items out to his vehicle, the report said.

The clerk told police he was scared because Barker seemed so confident, and the customer worried Barker may have had a weapon, the report said. The clerk also said he was following company procedures and planned to wait until Barker left and then call police, the report said.

Police talked to Barker, who said he did take more merchandise than he paid for, but felt he had an unspoken agreement with the clerk, the report said.

Officers also found needles and heroin inside Barker’s vehicle.

Barker was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $9,100 bond.
