Teen hit at freedom festival

A teenager was hit by a car during the Greenwood Freedom Festival after she darted out into traffic, according to a police report.

The teen was taken to Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health due to an abrasion to her head, police said. Shyanna Cummings, 14, of New Whiteland, was in good condition on Monday evening.

The accident happened just after 8:30 p.m. Saturday on Madison Avenue, at the intersection with Smith Valley Road. Tens of thousands of people had gathered in the area to watch the city’s fireworks show at the conclusion of the day-long festival.

Austin Czap, 24, Indianapolis, told police he was driving northbound on Madison when a pedestrian ran out in front of him and he could not avoid hitting her. A witness also told police that her friend ran out in front of the vehicle, the report said.
