Police chase, arrest Martinsville man

A Martinsville man was arrested after a pursuit with police that reached 110 mph on State Road 37.

Joseph A. Chenault, 32, 9325 Cash Road, was arrested on charges of resisting an officer and reckless driving.

At 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, a Johnson County sheriff’s deputy spotted a car speeding on State Road 37, near Bluff Acres Drive. When the deputy tried to stop the vehicle, the driver kept going, according to the report from the sheriff’s office.

The vehicle continued south on State Road 37, passing other vehicles and reaching speeds of 110 mph. At one point, the driver crossed into the northbound lanes to pass vehicles, then drove into the median and back into the southbound lanes, the report said.

The pursuit lasted more than 7 miles and stopped on Big Bend Road, just south of the Johnson County line, when the vehicle pulled into a business parking lot and stopped.

Deputies pulled Chenault from the vehicle. He told them he was having a rough time and panicked when he saw the deputy’s flashing lights, the report said.

Chenault was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $2,200 bond.
