Martha Olinda (Hastings) Shaw

Martha Olinda (Hastings) Shaw, 95, passed away Thursday, June 16, 2016. She was a resident of Franklin.

She was  born Sept. 5, 1920, in Muncie, to the late Freddie Earnest and Rebecca Jane (Oxley) Hastings.

Martha was a graduate of New Castle High School. She then married Eugene Morton Shaw on Sept. 1, 1940, in New Castle.

Her memory and legacy carry on through her son, Phil (Doris) Shaw; daughter in-law, Norma Smith; grandchildren, Krista Mohr, Andrew Butler, Aaron (Julie) Shaw and Emily (Dan) Silverman; great grandchildren, Lauren Mohr, Jonathan Mohr, Maria Shaw, Samuel Shaw, Isaiah Silverman, and Micah Silverman.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband; her son, Stephen James Shaw; five brothers and sisters, Lola Schooley, Kenneth Hastings, Opal Meigs, Wanneta Williams and Paul Hastings.

Martha was a member of Shiloh Community Church and a former member of Columbus Free Methodist Church.

She worked in a parachute factory in San Diego during World War II. She was a licensed practical nurse, a homemaker who was always busy in church activities. She also sold Tupperware and worked part time for York Engines. She loved to sing and was an accomplished seamstress. She loved children, animals and making sweet treats for family and friends.

A service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 21, 2016, at Simplicity Funeral & Cremation Care, 951 N. Main St., Franklin. Friends may call from noon to service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Martha will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery.
