Commerce Drive in Franklin closing temporarily

A Franklin street will close for three days while crews do utility work to prepare for a new grocery store.

Later this month, Commerce Drive, just west of U.S. 31, will close for three days while crews do utility work to prepare for the new Meijer store planned to open next year. The road will be closed from U.S. 31 to Cumberland Drive.

Crews will tear up the road and then repave it, instead of cutting into the road to install the utilities, Mayor Joe McGuinness said.

The road wasn’t in need of immediate paving, but having that work done before the Meijer store opens will help, he said.

An exact date hasn’t been set for the closure, he said. Crews plan to post a sign in the coming days warning motorists about the upcoming closure. That sign will be up for two weeks before the road is closed, McGuinness said.

Closing the road now makes sense while school is out, since that is a main route to Franklin Community High School, he said.

Traffic will be detoured onto County Road 100E and Simon Road.
