Thief steals one car, tries to steal another from homes along U.S. 31

Police are investigating after a stolen truck was found, a vehicle was broken into and another vehicle was reported stolen all within a half-mile area along U.S. 31, south of Amity.

Shortly after 7 a.m. Sunday, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputy found a white pickup truck on the side of the road near the 4800 block of U.S. 31, south of Amity. The back window was shattered, and the truck was missing a tire, according to the report. When the deputy called the owner, he said no one had permission to drive his truck and that it was likely stolen from his home in Madison, according to the report.

Deputies were then called to a nearby home, where the resident reported that sometime early Sunday his company work truck was stolen from his driveway, according to the report.

Less than a half mile south on U.S. 31, two residents woke up Sunday morning to find wires hanging from inside their car and panels on the floorboard, according to the report. Fingerprints were found on the panels inside that car, the report said.

Investigators said they believe the truck left on the side of U.S. 31 is related to the two other reports from nearby residents, Sheriff Doug Cox said.
