Man flees from multiple-vehicle wreck on I-65

One man was arrested after a seven-vehicle crash that closed Interstate 65 on Thursday afternoon.

At 4:15 p.m., a semi driven by Jose Montalvo, 43, Hialeah, Florida, struck another semi in stopped traffic in a construction zone on I-65, just north of the Franklin exit. The crash set off a chain reaction of multiple collisions involving six semis and a van, according to a news release from Indiana State Police.

The crash shut down northbound lanes of I-65 for about three hours, and one other semi driver, who police did not identify, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, the release said.

After the crash, Montalvo ran from the scene. Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies later found him and he was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of a crash and driving without insurance. He was also ticketed for following too closely and several federal motor carrier violations, the release said.

Three semis had to be towed from the crash site, and the Needham Fire Department hazardous materials team was called in to clean up engine and transmission fluids and leaking fuel from the semis, the release said.

Montalvo was taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was held on $2,000 bond.
