Center Grove special meeting planned

Center Grove is hosting a community forum to discuss what policies the school district should have for restrooms and locker rooms for transgender students.

At 6:30 p.m. today, parents and residents are invited to a community forum in the high school auditorium, 2717 S. Morgantown Road, Greenwood, to discuss the school district’s policy on which restrooms and locker rooms can be used by transgender students.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Department of Education released guidance that transgender students should be allowed to use the restroom or locker room they identify with although the room doesn’t coincide with their birth gender.

An attorney told Center Grove school board members that they could either ignore the federal guidance, convert all restrooms to single-stall unisex facilities, install designated unisex bathrooms, work with transgender students individually to find the best solution for them or allow students to choose whichever restroom they want.

The school district wants community input on the issue.

At 5:45 p.m., the school board will meet at the Center Grove Education Service Center, 4800 W. Stones Crossing Road, Greenwood, to vote on a press box project, according to the agenda. Automobile dealership owner Ray Skillman has committed money to upgrade the football stadium’s press box.
