If you are ready to get serious about losing weight, you can earn money this summer as you drop pounds. Serious money.

Johnson Memorial Health Weight Loss and Wellness Center is starting the $10,000 Team Challenge to encourage residents to get moving and drop excess weight while making money.

The health center has partnered with company HealthyWage for the contest.

Here’s how it works: You and four teammates sign up and pay $70 each. HealthyWage will coach you during the contest period from June 17 to Sept. 9. Your team’s goal is to lose the greatest percentage of body weight.

Teams can win cash prizes — $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second place and $3,000 for third place. HealthyWage will coordinate fitness challenges and provide weekly nutrition and fitness tips. The contest requires 150 teams to register.

With statistics showing that more people are becoming obese and overweight in Indiana, the program makes sense for the community, said Beth Ross, program operations coordinator in marketing at Johnson Memorial Health.

“This program is motivating people to have healthier lifestyles. We have lots of options for weight loss — surgical and nonsurgical,” she said, but this program gives residents a way to take off weight without medical intervention.

The unique lifestyle changes required to keep weight off are only spurred on by the cash incentive, she said. Even if you’re not on a winning team, you can still benefit in many ways and not be out $70 in the end.

Participants who have kept off 10 percent of their body weight six months after the contest ends can earn their registration fee back.

“It’s the motivation that creates the dedication that creates the concentration that creates the skinny vacation,” Ross said.

HealthyWage Weight Loss Challenge

The Johnson Memorial Health Weight Loss and Wellness Center $10,000 Team Challenge will encourage residents to lose weight in a competition.

Teams of five compete for the biggest weight loss percentage from June 17 to Sept. 9. Participants can win cash prizes funded independently and guaranteed by HealthyWage.

The top-performing team will win $10,000; second place will win $5,000; and third place will win $3,000.

Register by June 1.

Each participant pays a $70 registration fee and weighs in at the beginning and end of the contest. At least 150 teams are required for the contest to go forward.
