Richard Dale “Dick” Davenport

Richard Dale “Dick” Davenport, age 82, passed away peacefully at home in Trafalgar at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016.

He was born Jan. 20, 1934, in Morgantown to Dale Hoagland and Marjorie (Collier) Davenport.

Dick was a 1952 graduate of Trafalgar High School and attended Purdue University.

He served in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

He married June Yvonne (Yoder) Davenport on Dec. 1, 1957 in Helmsburg. She preceded him in death on Sept. 27, 1990.

Dick retired in 2008 after 30 years as owner and operator of Dick Davenport Construction. He tended his family farm, D&D Dairy Farms in Trafalgar, during those 30 years.

Dick was a past member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church in Trafalgar. 

In his younger years he enjoyed playing and coaching baseball and basketball. Dick was highly respected for his skills as a little league baseball umpire and was the first president of the Trafalgar Bantam League Football Program.

He was passionate about raising bird dogs, quail hunting, reading fiction books, and he was an avid fisherman.

Dick was a fan of Indiana University basketball and the Indianapolis Colts.

He is survived by his children, Richard David (Delia) Davenport of Jacksonville, Florida, Donald Alan Davenport of Trafalgar and Douglas William (Kris) Davenport of Franklin; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, June; and a sister, Janice K. Mock.

The Rev. Ed Tharp will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Military rites will be presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards following the funeral service on Thursday. A meal will be provided for family and friends following the funeral service Thursday at the Morgantown Community Center.

A memorial bonfire/cookout celebrating the reunion of Dick & Yvonne will be at 5 p.m. Saturday at 403 Oregon St., Trafalgar. Everyone is invited.
