Longtime dentist retires

Dr. George Kopko, a Bargersville dentist, has recently retired and turned his practice over to Dr. Joel Lanie.

Kopko was in practice at 50 S. State Road 135 for 39 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1974 to 1976 after graduating from dental school.

Local hospital gets excellence award

Johnson Memorial Health was recently recognized as a 2016 PRC Five Star Excellence in Healthcare Award winner, and according to a recent survey, scored in the top 10 percent of facilities nationwide.

The distinction was determined through the 2015 Inpatient Services database by healthcare research leader Professional Research Consultants.

Johnson Memorial Health will be honored with the award during the 2016 Excellence in Healthcare Conference in Miami, Florida later this month.

The Excellence in Healthcare Awards recognize organizations and individuals who achieve excellence by improving patient experience and healthcare employee engagement, based on patient surveys.

Greenwood optometrist serving on association board

Dr. Christopher Browning of Greenwood has been elected treasurer of the board of the Indiana Optometric Association.

Browning and other officers were inducted at the IOA’s 119th Annual Spring Convention in April. He has also served in other leadership positions in the industry, including as president of the Central Indiana Optometric Society and as a trustee.

Browning is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Optometry and practices at VisionQuest EyeCare in Greenwood.

Debit card shows support for local teams, raises money

Indiana Members Credit Union has donated $17,375 to 10 area schools for the 2015-16 school year through a debit card program that promotes school spirit.

Fans at area school districts can show spirit and support by signing up for school-themed debit cards. Every time the cards are used, schools benefit.

The following schools were presented checks for the 2015-16 school year: Beech Grove, Brownsburg, Carmel, Center Grove, Franklin Township, Lawrence North, Noblesville, Roncalli, Westfield and Zionsville.

Correctional facility employees get honors

Edinburgh Correctional Facility staff recently celebrated Correctional Employee Appreciation Week.

Festivities started with a cookout, 5k walk/run, bean bag toss tournament, a breakfast feast, and a staff awards day and luncheon.

Brianna Newton, program coordinator, was named employee of the year and Mitchell Young was named officer of the year. Catherine Bowie, casework manager, took first place in the 5k walk/run. Caseworkers Toni Jaynes and Kaleb Robinson won the bean bag toss tournament.

The Edinburgh Correctional Facility is located in Edinburgh on Camp Atterbury and was founded in 1991. Edinburgh is a minimum security facility that houses 320 offenders, including more than 40 work crews supporting Camp Atterbury and other community and state agencies.
