Grave in middle of road slated for work

Motorists traveling in Blue River Township, near the grave in the middle of the road, should look for detour signs later this week.

County Road 400S, between U.S. 31 and County Road 700E near Amity, will be closed for about one week, starting Wednesday. The road is slated to be reopened by May 18, depending on the weather.

Employees with the Johnson County Highway Department will be making improvements to the median of the grave in the middle of the road, where Nancy Kerlin Barnett was buried in 1831. Her grave will be lowered deeper into the ground and additional protection will be added, such as curbing or a short wall, will be installed so motorists do not disturb the site.

Drivers will be redirected to County Road 650S while the road is under construction, according to a news release from the Johnson County Highway Department.
