Vitula Hughes Whitworth

Vitula Hughes Whitworth, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, April 9, 2016, in Franklin. She was a resident of Franklin.

She was born Aug. 10, 1928, in Breckenridge County, Kentucky, to Wilbur and Thelma (Leslie) Sharp.

She married Joseph T. Braden. She later married John Hughes.

She is survived by four sons, Roger Hughes (Donna) and Michael Hughes (Beth), both of Franklin, Tony Braden (Fran) of Florida and Rodney Braden (Martha) of Franklin. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Bland of Franklin; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She married Guthrie Hall Whitworth on Nov. 16, 1991. He preceded her in passing. She also was preceded in passing by her parents; three brothers; five sisters; two grandsons, John Scott Braden and John Flynn; and one great-grandchild, Logan Braden.

Vitula was a hard worker. She was employed by Welcome Nursing Home and later at the Indiana Masonic Home.

Vitula’s husband, John Hughes, founded the Franklin Auction in 1958, and together they continued in the business until his death in 1989. Sons Roger and Mike continue running the business today.

Vitula loved spending time with her family. She loved singing, playing guitar and writing songs.

She was a member of Open Door Fellowship for many years.

A celebration of Vitula’s life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St., (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
