Donald R. “Buz” Smith, age 83, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening, March 22, 2016, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Brown County

Buz was born Feb. 16, 1933, in Greenwood, to the late Ralph R. and Alice C. (Jordan) Smith. He was a 1951 graduate of Helmsburg High School.

After graduation, Buz went on to serve as a Seaman First Class Training Devices Airman with the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He married Donna L. Hughes on Sept. 4, 1993, in Greenwood. She survives after 22 loving years of marriage.

Buz retired in 1987 from Eli Lilly after 32 years in the insulin department. He belonged to the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Mooresville, the Plainfield American Legion Post  No. 13, and the Purple Martin Conservation Society.

Buz enjoyed watching Duke basketball as well as NASCAR, with Dale Earnhart Sr. being his favorite driver. He had a purple martin colony, which he enjoyed tending to every spring.

Buz will be missed by his wife, Donna; children, Robert (Teresa) McCalister and Amy (Steven) Park; grandchildren, Samantha, R.J., Candace, Hailee and Michael; great-grandchildren, Breianna, Hunter and Conner; and several nieces and nephews.

Buz was preceded in death by his parents; son Christopher Smith; and sisters, Donna Lucas, Barbara Stevens and Mary Alice MacIntyre.

The Rev. Terry Foster will conduct a funeral service at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St., Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial with military graveside rites will be presented at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
