College update – March 19

Taylor University freshman Courtney Moriarity earned her first collegiate win in a very dramatic way.

Not only did she pitch a six inning no-hitter in an 8-0 win against Cincinnati-Clermont, but she also hit two home runs. The Center Grove graduate allowed just one baserunner, her only walk of the game. She struck out seven batters.

Moriarity now has a 1-2 pitching record for the Trojans (9-5) and a 3.82 ERA.

Center Grove

The Taylor softball team (9-5) won twice against both Lourdes and Cincinnati-Clermont. Anna Gunderson had one double, four singles, one RBI and three runs scored in 11 at-bats in the four wins and is hitting .286 (14 for 49).

The Indianapolis softball team (17-0) remained undefeated with doubleheader win against Rockhurst and William Jewell. Natalie Lalich had two triples, two singles, five RBIs and two runs scored in nine at-bats in the four wins and is hitting .490 (24 for 49).

Montevallo softball pitcher Abbey Pratt gave up two hits, two walks and three earned runs in one inning and was charged with the loss in a 6-2 defeat by North Alabama. She has a 1-1 record and an ERA of 6.90.

Kimmy Sullivan had one hit, one RBI and one run scored in six at-bats as a pinch hitter for the Notre Dame softball team (21-3) in three wins against Virginia and two against Florida International. She is hitting .412 (7 for 17).

Victoria Boyer had two hits in five at-bats for the Palm Beach Atlantic softball team (16-9) in two losses to Florida Tech and is batting .478 (11 for 23).

The Purdue softball team (14-11) lost four of six games played in Orlando, Florida. Mallory Baker had five hits in 15 at-bats, including one double, and is hitting .300 (18 for 60).

Shelby Shaffer has started each game for the Anderson softball team (3-2) and is batting .444 (8 for 18), with one double, one RBI and two runs scored.

The IPFW men’s basketball team (24-10) lost 79-55 to San Diego State in the first round of the NIT. Joe Reed led the Mastodons in scoring in his final college game with 17 points (5 for 13, 0 for 4, 7 for 7) in 33 minutes. He added five rebounds and one steal.

The Indiana State women’s basketball team lost 70-45 to Missouri State in the first round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. Regan Wentland had one rebound and one blocked shot in seven minutes of play. She played an average of 9.5 minutes in 28 games this season and had 32 points, 42 rebounds, nine assists and five blocked shots.

Indiana University’s Sydney Clute finished 10th in the pole vault event at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a vault of 13-9¼.

Brock Warner has scored 10 goals and has 13 assists for the Hanover lacrosse team (3-4).

Presleigh Hobbs had one assist for the Franklin lacrosse team (1-1) in a 15-9 loss to Hendrix, Arkansas.

The Marian baseball team (8-13) split two games with Lourdes. Zeke Howie had one hit in three at-bats as a first baseman in the 1-0 win and was the losing pitcher in an eight inning 6-3 loss, giving up two earned runs, six hits and no walks in five innings of relief and striking out six. Teammate Brice Laigle was hit-less in two at-bats in Game 1.

Brad Walker had one double, one RBI and one run scored in three at-bats as the designated hitter for the IU-Southeast baseball team (9-7) in a 5-4 loss to Huntington. He is hitting .364 (4 for 11) in five games.

Devon Hensley is batting .205 (8 for 39) with one double, two triples, two home runs and 12 RBIs in 14 starts for the University of Indianapolis baseball team (11-3).

Grand Valley baseball pitcher Zach Anderson (2-1) gave up two earned runs, eight hits and two walks and struck out five in six innings in a 13-inning 4-4 tie with Ohio Dominican. He was the winning pitcher in relief in a 17-9 defeat of Rockhurst, yielding one hit, two walks and no runs in five innings and striking out four.

Patrick Norris has played in each game for the Danville baseball team (5-3) and is batting .286 (8 for 28). Teammate Eathen Stephen is hitting .214 (3 for 14) in five games.

Pitcher Mark Garrett has a 4.35 ERA with no decisions in 101/3 innings in four games for the Anderson baseball team (3-7). He has given up five walks and 11 hits and has struck out 12.

Wheaton tennis player Emily Jones won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and 8-3 at No. 2 doubles in a 9-0 defeat of Messiah.

The Marian women’s tennis team defeated Aquinas 7-2 and lost 8-1 to Keiser. Grace Neathery won 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 at No. 3 singles and 8-0 at No. 2 doubles against Aquinas and scored Marian’s only point with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles and lost 8-0 at No. 2 doubles against Keiser.

The Ball State men’s tennis team lost 7-0 to Lipscomb and 6-1 to Vanderbilt. Luke Andersen lost 7-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and 6-4 at No. 1 doubles to Lipscomb and 6-3, 6-4 in singles and 6-4 in doubles to Vanderbilt. Conner Andersen lost 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and 6-1 at No. 2 doubles to Lipscomb and 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to Vanderbilt. He was leading 5-4 at No. 2 doubles when the match was stopped.

Whiteland

Jake Scott won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles and 8-1 at No. 3 doubles in Taylor’s 7-2 tennis win against Greenville.

The Ball State gymnastics team lost to North Carolina State. Sarah Ebeyer was fifth of 12 in the vault, fifth of 12 on the beam and seventh of 12 in the floor exercises.

The Eastern Michigan gymnastics team defeated Central Michigan and Southeast Missouri in a three team meet. Kim Ebeyer was seventh of 18 in the vault, fifth of 18 on the beam and 11th of 18 in the floor exercises.

Paige Lundy was second for Franklin and eighth of 22 overall with a score of 83 at the three-team Katman Golf Classic hosted by DePauw.

The Taylor baseball team (13-6) won four games against Marygrove. Jared Adkins had one double, one triple, one home run, two singles, five RBIs and eight runs scored in 11 at-bats in the four-game sweep. He is batting .267 (12 for 45).

Andi Stewart is hitting .273 (3 for 11) for the Taylor softball team (9-5).

Greenwood

The Dayton women’s tennis team lost 7-0 to Ohio State and won 6-1 against conference foe, St. Joseph’s of Philadelphia. Jackie Kawamoto lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to Ohio State and won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 singles and lost 6-2 at No. 2 doubles against St. Joseph’s. Jade Kawamoto lost 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to Ohio State and won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and 6-1 at No. 3 doubles against St. Joseph’s.

The Ohio Northern women’s tennis team defeated Spring Hill 9-0 and lost 9-0 to Oberlin. Brittany Toney won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and 8-1 at No. 2 doubles in the win and lost 6-1, 6-0 and 8-4 in the loss.

The Franklin men’s tennis team lost 8-1 to Greenville and 9-0 to Rose-Hulman. Alex Hammer won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and lost 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 singles against Greenville and lost 6-1, 6-0 in singles and 8-1 in doubles to Rose-Hulman.

Conner Morris is batting .200 (7 for 35) in 10 games for the Anderson baseball team (3-7).

The Indiana baseball team (6-8) won two of three against Western Carolina and defeated Evansville 7-6. Alex Krupa had one hit in each game (4 for 12), two RBIs and two runs scored. He is batting .268 (11 for 41).

Aaron Doughty has pitched 21 innings in eight games for the Lindsey Wilson baseball team (20-7) and has a 2-2 record with a 5.14 ERA.

Katie Struewing had two hits in seven at-bats for the Franklin softball team (7-5) in a doubleheader split with DePauw and is hitting .286 (12 for 42).

Kelly Pevely is hitting .316 with three home runs and 11 RBIs for the IPFW softball team (6-18).

Pitcher Brittany Gray has a 7-2 record with a 2.45 ERA in 511/3 innings for the Georgia softball team (23-3).

Indian Creek

Brenden Smith is batting .167 (3 for 18) in 10 games, seven as a starter, for the Marian baseball team (5-9).

Franklin

Hannah White was first for Franklin and fourth of 22 overall with a score of 80 at the three-team Katman Golf Classic at DePauw.

Jeremy McKinney has pitched 102/3 innings in six games for the Indiana State baseball team (10-5) and has a 1-1 record with a 1.69 ERA, with 15 strikeouts and only four walks. He earned his second save of the season with two hitless, scoreless innings of relief in a 4-1 win against Campbell.

The St. Joseph’s tennis team lost 9-0 to King College, Tennessee and won 6-3 against East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Mary Huffine lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles and 6-2 at No. 1 doubles to King and won 6-1, 6-1 and 9-7 against East Stroudsburg.

Grace Paszek had two hits in seven at-bats in Franklin’s doubleheader split with the DePauw softball team and is batting .324 (12 for 37). Olivia Paszek was the winning pitcher for the Grizzlies in the 6-1 first game win, giving up one earned run, six hits and no walks in seven innings while striking out one. The sophomore has a 6-1 record with a 1.55 ERA in 402/3 innings. She has struck out 28 and walked nine.
