Letter: Legislation caused shortage of teachers

To the editor:

This viewpoint presented (“Identify then pay good teachers well,” March 2) tries to portray legislation trying to have a reasonable solution to the statewide teacher shortage; also portraying the teacher union as being unreasonable by not being supportive of said legislation.

Oddly, no mention was made addressing that there was no teacher shortage until legislation forced union-driven collective bargaining to be replaced by a not-so-well-thought-out plan that would reward the best teachers!

The net result — no one understanding pay structure, causing not only good teachers to leave, but also fewer good candidates to enter the field!
