Lauck already right at home at Roncalli

INDIANAPOLIS

David Lauck has been calling Roncalli High School home for nearly half his life.

A student-athlete at Roncalli in the early 1990s, Lauck has been employed at his alma mater since the beginning of the 2003-04 school year.

Currently in his fourth year as Roncalli’s assistant athletics director, Lauck, who turns 40 in April, already has been named Dave Toner’s successor as athletics director beginning the 2016-2017 school year.

Lauck, a 1994 graduate who picked up a total of six varsity letters playing for the Rebels’ football and baseball programs, understands the culture and tradition of his workplace.

“I really enjoyed my high school experience at Roncalli. I knew growing up it was a very special place. That it was very unique,” he said. “There were some immeasurables there when you’re talking school spirit. That’s something that’s always been part of my life, and it’s still alive and continues to make Roncalli a unique place to work.

“It’s a fun environment. It’s a healthy environment. We continue to balance academics, athletics and spiritual growth, and that’s really important to me.”

Lauck returned to Roncalli as a teacher in the school’s S.T.A.R.S. (Students That Are Ready for Success) special needs program in 2003. He’s about to begin his eighth season as the Rebels’ varsity softball coach. His team celebrated a Class 3A state softball title in 2011.

Lauck’s family’s lineage at his workplace dates all the way back to the 1930s.

In 1935, Lauck’s paternal grandfather, Charles “Bunny” Lauck, graduated from Sacred Heart High School (later renamed to Kennedy and merged with Chartrand High School to form Roncalli in 1969). David’s father, Chick, also is a Sacred Heart alum (Class of 1965).

David and his wife Kara’s daughter, Olivia, a Roncalli freshman, officially makes it four generations when she graduates in 2019.

“I think David will do a tremendous job. He’s very organized; he’s very personable with the kids,” Toner said. “Obviously, because of his coaching experience as a head coach here in softball he’ll identify very well with the coaches on our staff, which is very important,” Toner said.

Lauck credits Toner, the Roncalli athletics director since 2000, for helping his growth as a school administrator these past four years.

“Athletics is a big part of Roncalli. There are a lot of people out there who support it and a lot of people out there who demand excellence and expect excellence,” Lauck said. “We have a commitment to excellence and that’s the goal, to keep it there.

“I feel I do owe our community the best.”
