Football at the next level

Stepping up his (Football) game

Months before his first game, a Greenwood teen can already picture himself walking onto the football field at Taylor University.

Greenwood Community High School senior Kyle Nixon has attended Taylor football games and summer football camps on campus, and just signed his letter of intent to join the team.

But getting a scholarship didn’t come easily, Nixon said.

He was invited to visit Taylor last summer, but the recruiting process from the college didn’t start until November, Nixon said.

Just last month, Nixon found out he would be getting a spot on the football team next fall.

“I was really worried. A couple months ago, I wasn’t even thinking about going to Taylor anymore, but then I finally got accepted,” Nixon said.

While waiting for his top choice to finalize their football team picks, Nixon applied to four other colleges — University of Indianapolis, Hanover College, Ball State University and Indiana State University. He also was considering playing football at Tiffin University, even though that was out-of-state, he said.

But once he heard back from Taylor, Nixon immediately knew he that was his top choice.

“So now I just want to get out of here. I’m ready to leave,” he said.
