Dorothy L. (Behlen) Hughes

FRANKLIN

Dorothy L. (Behlen) Hughes, age 94, passed away on Saturday morning, March 5, 2016, at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. She was a resident of the Franklin United Methodist Community.

Dorothy was born Sept. 24, 1921, in Lincoln, Nebraska, to the late William and Lydia (Schmanski) Behlen.

She was a 1939 graduate of Benton Harbor High School in Michigan and went on to marry Robert M. Hughes on Oct. 18, 1942, in San Diego, California. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1996, after 53 loving years of marriage.

Dorothy worked as a secretary for the INDUS Corporation in Indianapolis and worked as a real estate agent during the 1950s and 1960s in Franklin, selling real estate for Marge Quinlan and Paul Scott.

Dorothy was also the co-owner, along with her husband, of the Big Cone Drive Inn in Franklin. She also worked for William Jones Accounting in Franklin.

She was a member of the Emanuel Church of Greenwood and the Bargersville Senior Center.

Prior to Dorothy’s husband’s passing, they were residents of Largo, Florida for more than 20 years.

She enjoyed playing euchre, working in her flower and vegetable gardens and spending the summers at Lake Lemon. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Robert (Cindy) Hughes of Martinsville, William (Cindy) Hughes of Chesterton and Russell (Rusty) Hughes of Franklin; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

A private family memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Marion Glover at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
