Career-based choice

After a tour of the campus, one student decided quickly into her senior year that she wanted to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Since intermediate school, Franklin Community High School senior Hannah Hensley has known she wanted to work in the health care field. In August, Hensley took a tour of IUPUI and decided then and there that she wanted to attend.

“My mom was so skeptical, so I made her go on the tour with me and she absolutely loved it — especially the science building; it’s brand new,” Hensley said. “They pretty much updated the entire thing. There’s new equipment, new technology, and a whole new program.”

Now, Hensley’s mom is trying to convince her older brother to change colleges, Hensley said.

“I think she actually loved it even more than I did,” Hensley said.

The only other college Hensley applied to was Ball State University, and she didn’t even look at their acceptance letter when it came a few months later, she said.

IUPUI not only has the updated science building, but the proximity to local hospitals like Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health and Eskenazi Health stood out to her for future internship possibilities, she said.

“Making those connections is a huge deal,” Hensley said.
