College update – February 6

Center Grove High School graduate Luke Andersen, playing No. 1 singles for the Ball State men’s tennis team, has opened the season with three consecutive singles wins.

After defeating Eastern Illinois’ number one player 6-2, 7-5 two weeks ago, the junior won 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a 4-3 loss to Michigan State and 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a 5-2 defeat of Detroit-Mercy. He has a 2-1 record at No. 1 doubles.

Center Grove

Ball State tennis player Conner Andersen has a 2-1 singles record after winning 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles against Eastern Illinois, losing 7-5, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to Michigan State and winning 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 against Detroit-Mercy. The freshman has a 1-2 record at No. 2 doubles.

Tennessee-Chattanooga wrestler Sean Mappes won 10-2 at 174 pounds in a 37-9 defeat of Davidson.

The Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball team (20-3, 8-3) defeated Marian 82-72 and Spring Arbor 88-73. Jonny Marlin had 14 points (5 for 10, 3 for 5, 1 for 2) and team highs in rebounds (9), steals (4) and assists (5) in 38 minutes against Marian, and 18 points (6 for 10, 4 for 7, 2 for 2), one rebound, five assists and a team-high three steals in 34 minutes against Spring Arbor.

The IPFW men’s basketball team (18-6, 7-2) defeated Oral Roberts 68-63 and Western Illinois 88-67. Joe Reed had four points (1 for 5, 0 for 0, 2 for 4), five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 25 minutes against Oral Roberts and 17 points (6 for 6, 1 for 1, 4 for 6), two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 24 minutes against Western Illinois.

The Ancilla men’s basketball team (16-6) lost 85-76 to Lansing and 77-70 to Lake Michigan. Anderson McCoy had a total of seven points (1 for 9, 1 for 4, 4 for 4) in the two losses.

The Anderson women’s basketball team (3-16, 2-10) lost 70-64 to Defiance and 61-51 to Transylvania. Shelby Shaffer had 15 points (6 for 9, 3 for 6, 0 for 1), two rebounds, six assists and one steal in 31 minutes against Defiance and eight points (3 for 15, 1 for 6, 1 for 2), six rebounds, six assists and one blocked shot in 36 minutes against Transylvania.

The Oberlin women’s basketball team (10-10, 4-7) lost 55-51 to Kenyon and 69-40 to DePauw. Katie Lucaites played 18 minutes in the two games and had four points (2 for 5), five rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

Indiana’s Sydney Clute finished second of 20 in the women’s pole vault competition, with a vault of 13-6 2/10 at the Indiana University Relays. Notre Dame’s Conner Stapleton was 15th of 27 in the men’s 400 meters (50.15).

Indianapolis, Marian and Southern Indiana competed at the University of Indianapolis Indoor Track and Field Challenge. Southern Indiana’s Jordan Jones was 13th of 25 in the women’s shot put (34-1) and seventh of 18 in the weight throw (43-4 ½). Marian’s Erin Rosebrough was 21st of 45 in the women’s 60-meter dash (8.57) and 24th of 28 in the 400 meters (1:11.93). Teammate Rachel Dever was 10th of 41 in the 3,000 (10:41.1) and third of nine in the 5,000 (19:11.16). Indianapolis’ Casey Wendorff was 22nd of 44 in the men’s 3,000 (9:49.59).

Emma Schoettmer won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.82), was second of seven in the 200 (2:14.80) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team in Arizona’s swimming loss to Texas.

In the Cincinnati women swimming team’s loss to Kentucky, the Bearcats’ Caroline Sheehan was third of nine in the 100 freestyle (52.92), ninth of 15 in the 400 IM (4:26.98) and seventh of eight in the 200 freestyle (1:55.37).

The Xavier women’s swimming team lost in dual meets to both Akron and Wright State. Mikaela Saugstad was second of eight in the 200 IM (2:14.55) and sixth of seven in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.40) against Wright State and sixth of seven in the 150 breaststroke (1:50.77) and eighth of eight in the 50 breaststroke (32.49) against Akron.

The Evansville men’s swimming team defeated Ball State in a dual meet. The Aces’ Dan O’Brien won the 100 butterfly (51.86), was fourth of six in the 200 freestyle (1:49.57) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay team. The Cardinals’ Jake Eckert was second of six in the 200 butterfly (1:59.92) and fourth of six in the 200 IM (2:02.02).

Edinburgh

The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (17-3, 7-2) lost 97-84 to Augustana and won 85-56 against Millikin. Kyle Wuest had 12 points (5 for 11, 1 for 3, 1 for 2), three rebounds and one assist in 24 minutes against Augustana, and 15 points (6 for 9, 3 for 4, 0 for 0), three rebounds, five assists and one steal in 24 minutes against Millikin.

Indian Creek

The Asbury women lost to the Centre College swimming team and defeated Urbana in dual meets. Kaitlyn Smith was fifth of six in the 1,000 freestyle (12:45.54) and sixth of seven in the 100 backstroke (1:14.03) in the loss and fourth of six in the 50 freestyle (29.89), fourth of four in the 100 backstroke (1:13.13) and fifth of five in the 50 butterfly (31.76) in the win.

The Ancilla men’s basketball team (16-6) lost 85-76 to Lansing and 77-70 to Lake Michigan. Dylan Phair had nine points (3 for 6, 3 for 4) against Lansing and eight points (3 for 5, 1 for 4, 1 for 1) against Lake Michigan.

Northern Illinois women’s basketball player Ally Lehman had 22 points (8 for 14, 1 for 4, 5 for 5), 14 rebounds, seven assists and four steals, all team-highs, in 38 minutes in a 95-85 loss to Kent State and eight points (4 for 11, 0 for 2, 0 for 0), one blocked shot and team highs in rebounds (13) and assists (8) in 39 minutes in a 76-74 win against Buffalo. Northern Illinois is 9-11, 2-7.

Whiteland

Haley Howard led the Tennessee-Martin women’s basketball team (14-7, 7-1) in scoring with 22 points (8 for 12, 3 for 5, 3 for 4) in a 77-50 defeat of Tennessee State and 21 points (9 for 15, 3 for 7, 0 for 0) in a 92 -62 win against Murray State, the Skyhawks’ seventh consecutive win. The senior had two rebounds, three assists and two steals in 33 minutes against Tennessee State and three rebounds, four assists, one blocked shot and three steals in 35 minutes against Murray.

The IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (10-9, 7-3) defeated Midway 95-48 and Alice Lloyd 78-55. Michaela Harris had 14 points (6 for 9, 1 for 3, 1 for 2), six rebounds, two assists and three steals in 27 minutes against Midway and two points (1 for 4, 0 for 1, 0 for 2), four rebounds, three assists and three steals in 33 minutes against Alice Lloyd.

The Franklin women’s swimming and diving team tied Illinois Wesleyan and defeated Rose-Hulman. Diver Bri Gunning was the only diving competitor in the one-meter event against Illinois Wesleyan and was second of three from the three-meter board and second of two in the one-meter event against Rose-Hulman.

Indianapolis’ Melissa Rios finished third of 45 in the 60-meter dash (7.97) and fourth of 39 in the 200 (26.83) at The University of Indianapolis Indoor Track and Field Challenge. In the men’s events, the Greyhounds’ Brandon Benson was 34th of 57 in the 60-meter dash (7.57) and 13th of 43 in the 200 (23.48).

Ball State’s Sarah Ebeyer was fifth of 12 in both the vault and the floor exercises in the Cardinals’ gymnastics loss to Central Michigan.

In Eastern Michigan’s gymnastics win against Northern Illinois, Kim Ebeyer was first of 12 in the floor exercises, sixth of 12 in the vault and 10th of 12 on the beam.

Franklin

In Indiana’s dual-meet swimming win against Louisville, the Hoosiers’ Adam Destrampe won the 1,000 freestyle (9:17.05) and was third of eight in the 500 freestyle (4:30.73).

Franklin’s Madison Parker was second of six in the 5,000 meters (19:41.35) at Rose-Hulman’s Engineer Track and Field Invitational.

The St. Mary-of-the Woods basketball team (10-10) lost 117-99 to Oakland City. Tara Parmer had 28 points (10 for 14, 6 for 10, 2 for 2), five rebounds, three steals and one assist in 21 minutes; and Shelby Parmer had eight points (3 for 15, 0 for 5, 2 for 5), one rebound, five assists and one steal in 18 minutes.

Greenwood

Purdue’s David Dalton was 14th of 19 in the 300 meters (8:45.14) at the Indiana University Relays.

Franklin’s Erica Christy was second of 12 in the women’s shot put (39-3 ¼) and fourth of eight in the weight throw (39-5) at the Rose-Hulman Engineer Indoor Track and Field Invitational.

The Dayton women’s tennis team defeated both Bowling Green and IUPUI by 5-2 scores. Jackie Kawamoto won 6-7, 6-3, 10-5 at No. 4 singles against Bowling Green and 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 against IUPUI. Jade Kawamoto won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles against Bowling Green and 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 singles against IUPUI. Playing No. 2 doubles, Jackie lost 7-6 to Bowling Green and won 7-5 against IUPUI. Jade won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles against Bowling Green and 7-6 against IUPUI.
