Police looking for two men in credit card theft

Police are looking for help identifying two men caught on surveillance camera using credit cards stolen from a Center Grove area neighborhood.

On Friday, sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 5400 block of Gainesway Drive in the Wakefield neighborhood, near Smith Valley and Paddock roads. A resident said someone had gotten into his vehicle early that morning and stolen his wallet, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

That morning, the resident had gotten alerts from his bank that his cards had been used at gas stations in Greenwood and Indianapolis for purchases of more than $400, the report said.

Investigators got surveillance video from one of the gas stations off Smith Valley Road in Greenwood, which showed two men in a dark-colored car coming into the gas station and buying gift cards and other items around 2:30 a.m. Friday, the report said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office investigations tip line at 346-4654.

Police warning of IRS phone scam

Police are warning of a phone scam where the caller claimed to be with the sheriff’s office.

A Greenwood woman reported getting a call that showed up as being from the phone number for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office on caller ID.

The caller said he was a police officer named Matthew Jones and listed a badge number of 8947, and that he had gotten a complaint from the IRS. The caller gave a number for the woman to call the IRS, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

No deputy works for the sheriff’s office by that name nor does anyone have a similar badge number, Sheriff Doug Cox said.
