New year brings new day with new possibilities

What will 2016 bring? What will Jan. 2 bring?

Expect mistakes

If it was Jan. 2, 1860, I could anticipate the “planet” Vulcan being erroneously “discovered” by a French mathematician. Attempting to explain the peculiarities of planet Mercury’s orbit, Le Verrier’s hypothesized that they were the result of another planet — Vulcan.Le Verrier’s most famous achievement is his prediction of the existence of the then unknown planet Neptune, using only mathematics and astronomical observations of the known planet Uranus. Astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle used Le Verrier’s calculations to observe Neptune in 1846. Fourteen years later Le Verrier hypothesized incorrectly. If you’re working diligently on anything — business, your health, guiding a productive family — you can expect a few mistakes or blunders.

Expect some treasures

On this same nondescript Jan. 2 in 2009, after sitting idle for 50 years, a rare 1937 Bugatti Type 57s (two-seater) was found in good condition in a British garage — it sold for $4.4 million a month later.Of course, I would know if I had an “extra car” taking up space in the garage, so I can rule out finding a Bugatti. But I did find a favorite pair of brown Bisou Bisou, Michele Bohbot stretchy pants last weekend when I cleaned out my entire closet. Sometimes it’s the little things.

Expect changes

Jan. 2, 1945 — Kentucky began a 130-home basketball game win streak — it ended in 1955.Jan. 2, 1974 — 55 mph speed limit was imposed by Richard Nixon.Jan. 2, 1999 — A brutal snowstorm smashed into the Midwest, causing 14 inches of snow in Milwaukee and 19 inches in Chicago, where temperatures plunged to minus-13; 68 deaths were reported.
