Former Colts player arrested in Greenwood

A former Colts player was arrested after police said he fired a shot into the air in a Greenwood neighborhood.

Zurlon Z. Tipton Jr., 25, Indianapolis, was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness early Friday morning

Police said Tipton, a running back who was released by the Colts this month, fired a shot from an automatic rifle outside of his girlfriend’s home in the Villages at Grassy Creek neighborhood off Stop 18 Road, near U.S. 31.

Just before 1 a.m., police were called to the 1400 block of Round Lake Road about shots that had been fired.

A witness told police a Jeep recently had left, and officers found and stopped the vehicle a couple blocks away, according to a Greenwood Police Department news release.

Tipton was driving and his brother was the passenger. Tipton told police they had gotten threatening text messages from his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend. The messages said Tipton’s girlfriend would be harmed, according to the release.

The two drove to Greenwood to check on Tipton’s girlfriend. Tipton believed the ex-boyfriend was inside the home and fired one shot into the air from an automatic rifle from the driveway of the home, the release said.

The ex-boyfriend was not at the home, the release said.

Tipton and his brother then left the home and were stopped by police. Inside the vehicle, police found an automatic rifle and a handgun. Tipton had a permit from Michigan to carry the handgun, the release said.

Tipton has been signed and waived by the Colts a few times since 2014. Most recently, he was waived by the Colts on Monday, according to the Colts website.

Tipton, 10177 Splitrock Way, was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was released on $3,300 bond.
