College update – December 19

The Indiana Wesleyan men’s basketball team (10-1) defeated IU-Kokomo 103-60 and Olivet 94-59 and is now ranked No. 1 in NAIA Division II.

Center Grove graduate Jonny Marlin led the Wildcats in assists in both wins, with seven against Kokomo and 10 against Olivet, and is ranked seventh among players from the 135 NAIA D-II schools with 6.46 assists per game.

The senior, who led Indiana Wesleyan with 20 points against Kokomo, averages 14.6 points per game and is shooting .573 from the field, .473 from behind the 3-point line, and .806 from the free-throw line.

Center Grove

The IPFW men’s basketball team (8-4) lost 90-65 to Indiana and defeated Austin Peay 85-68. Joe Reed had five points (2 for 7, 1 for 2, 0 for 1), six rebounds, one assist and one steal in 34 minutes against IU and 10 points (3 for 5, 4 for 6), four rebounds, three assists, one blocked shot and two steals in 32 minutes against Austin Peay.

The Wabash basketball team (5-4) beat Greenville 119-94 and lost 74-52 to Wooster. Joey Lenkey had three points (1 for 2, 1 for 2, 0 for 0), three rebounds, three assists and three steals in the two games.

The Ancilla men’s basketball team (9-3) beat Prairie State 71-56 and the Trine junior varsity 101-62. Anderson McCoy led Ancilla with eight assists, seven steals and 24 points (9 for 11, 2 for 3, 4 for 6), all team highs, and two rebounds against Trine and had eight points (2 for 5, 2 for 5, 2 for 2), a rebound, an assist and a steal against Prairie State.

Kelcey Daugherty had three points (1 for 3, 1 for 2, 0 for 0), three rebounds, two assists and one steal in 20 minutes for the Manchester women’s basketball team (2-4) in a 64-57 loss to Mount St. Joseph.

The Oberlin women’s basketball team (5-6, 0-3) lost 52-50 to Wooster and 63-45 to DePauw. Katie Lucaites played 16 minutes in the two games and had six points (3 for 4), four rebounds and two assists.

The Anderson women’s basketball team (3-6, 2-1) lost 68-41 to DePauw and 89-56 to Transylvania. Shelby Shaffer had two points (1 for 4, 0 for 1 0 for 3), three rebounds, three assists and one steal in 18 minutes against DePauw and 12 points (3 for 13, 1 for 2, 5 for 5), two rebounds, four assists and one steal in 23 minutes against Transylvania.

Starting linebacker Alex Aukerman had four solo tackles and three assists for the Army football team (2-10) in a 21-17 loss to Navy.

Sean Mappes won a 15-5 major decision for the Tennessee-Chattanooga wrestlers in a 31-12 win against Campbell.

The Purdue and Indiana track and field teams competed at the Hoosier Open. Purdue’s Justin Veteto was fourth of 12 in the men’s 200 meters (34.60) and 11th of 14 in the 60-meter hurdles (8.35). Indiana’s Derek Grimmer was eighth of 12 in the men’s 300 meters (35.85) and 11th of 18 in the 500 meters (1:06.15). The Hoosiers’ Sydney Clute was second of 10 in the women’s pole vault (13-01½), and teammate Taylor Pennington was seventh in the women’s high jump (5-1).

The Wisconsin Track and Field team competed in the Wisconsin Twilight Meet, with all the competitors from Wisconsin or unattached. The Badgers’ Austin Mudd, running unattached, was sixth of nine in the 1,500 meters 3:52.96.

Indianapolis’ Casey Wendorff was sixth of 10 in the 5,000 meters (17:22.43) at the University of Indianapolis Winter Break Indoor Track and Field Meet.

Edinburgh

Caleb Giles had six points (2 for 5, 2 for 4, 0 for 0) for the Franklin basketball team (1-7) in a 82-74 defeat of Earlham.

The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (8-1) won 106-67 against Olivet and 76-64 against Dubuque. Kyle Wuest had 13 points (3 for 8, 3 for 7, 4 for 4), four rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots in 21 minutes against Olivet and a team-high 19 points (7 for 13, 2 for 3, 3 for 4), five rebounds and one assist in 32 minutes against Dubuque.

Franklin

Dylan Phair had 11 points (3 for 4, 1 for 1, 4 for 5), five rebounds and one assist for the Ancilla basketball team (9-3) in a 71-56 defeat of Prairie State and 10 points (4 for 4, 2 for 2), six assists, one rebound and one steal in a 101-62 win against the Trine junior varsity.

The St. Mary-of-the-Woods basketball team (5-5) lost 79-49 to Brescia and 98-83 to Spalding. Tara Parmer had three points (1 for 9, 1 for 7, 0 for 0), three assists, two steals and a team-high seven rebounds against Brescia and five points (2 for 14, 1 for 7, 0 for 0), five rebounds, five assists and five steals against Spalding. Shelby Parmer saw her first action in weeks in a brief appearance against Brescia, missing four shots. In the loss to Spaulding, she had 16 points (6 for 16, 3 for 8, 1 for 1), one rebound and one assist.

Indian Creek

Indiana State’s Katie Wise finished 12th of 18 runners in the 300 meters (40.31) at the Hoosier Indoor Track and Field Open at IU.

The Northern Illinois women’s basketball team (4-3) lost 73-58 to Milwaukee and won 68-59 against Illinois State. Ally Lehman led Northern Illinois in scoring and rebounding in both games, with 14 points (6 for 10, 0 for 1, 2 for 2) and 12 rebounds against Milwaukee and 16 points (7 for 12, 1 for 1, 1 for 2) and 11 rebounds against Illinois State. She also totaled seven assists, six blocked shots and two steals.

Greenwood

The Hanover men’s basketball team (3-5, 2-1) defeated Transylvania 69-65 and lost 65-61 to Defiance. Jaren Hornbeak had six points (2 for 9, 1 for 5, 1 for 3) and three rebounds in 19 minutes in the two games.

Whiteland

Indiana State’s Danielle Muse was 13th in the 1,000 meters in 3:17.51 at the Hoosier Indoor Track and Field Open.

IUPUI’s John Hubler had one blocked shot in eight minutes in the 3-9 Jaguars’ 90-65 basketball loss to Creighton.

Michaela Harris had 11 points (2 for 4, 7 for 7), five rebounds, four steals, one assist and one blocked shot for the IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (4-5) in a 66-60 win against Oakland City.
