Greenwood helps Hawaiian band at contest

Daily Journal staff reports

The friendship between the marching bands of two schools evolved slowly.

Greenwood Community High School band director John Morse wrote music for the marching show of a Hawaii high school, Mililani High School. Greenwood’s color guard director is from the same band at Mililani.

So when the Honolulu high school marching band was performing in Indianapolis at the national Bands of America event and needed help, Greenwood responded.

The Marching Trojans from Mililani needed band instruments, since some of their bigger instruments and equipment were too big to ship from Oahu. That prompted Greenwood to lend the band front ensemble percussion equipment, electronics and amplification equipment, and a drum major podium.

The problem was unique, since the band from Hawaii was the first band from outside the continental United States to perform at Bands of America.

Then the students at Mililani High School watched the Marching Woodmen at the Indiana State School Music Association state finals to support the band that had helped them.
