Kenneth “Ken” G. Wheeler

Kenneth “Ken” G. Wheeler, 86, of Franklin, formerly of Southport, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015.

Ken was born Feb. 24, 1929, in Southport, to Charles and Lessie Wheeler.

He married Nora E. Nelson on April 12, 1953, in Rocky Ford, Colorado.

Ken is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nora (Nelson) Wheeler; children, Kevin N. Wheeler, Kurt A. Wheeler and Jane E. Fletcher; grandchildren, Ben and Brian Wheeler, Jackson L. Wheeler, Kyle and Clayton Fletcher.

He attended Ball State College from 1953 to 1954 then Indiana Central in 1955.

He worked for C. Max Askin for two years and then started his own independent insurance agency known as Cardinal Insurance Agency.

Ken was co-founder of Southport Jaycees, serving as president. He was a charter member of Perry Township Kiwanis Club and served eight years on the Perry Township school board.

He supported many community activities in early 1960s. He personally raised funds to start an American Legion baseball team that was runner-up in the state tournament the first year.

Ken served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1952.

He attended Southport High School, where he played football and baseball all four years.

He was a member of Prospect Masonic Lodge No. 714, the Scottish Rite, N.M.J. and Murat Temple.

Calling will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
