College update – December 12

The University of Tennessee-Martin women’s basketball team (4-4) defeated previously undefeated Alabama 83-65 and Samford 52-50. Leading Tennesse-Martin in scoring in both wins was former Daily Journal Player of the Year Haley Howard, a Whiteland graduate.

The senior, who transferred to Martin from Butler, had 21 points (7 of 11 from the field; 6 of 9 from the foul line; 1 of 2 3-pointers), four rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot against the Crimson Tide, and 16 points (5 of 10, 4 of 8, 2 of 2), six rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot against Samford.

Howard has made .467 percent of her shots from the field, .410 from 3-point range and .923 from the free-throw line in eight games, seven as a starter.

WHITELAND

  • Aaron Harris carried the ball once for four yards and assisted on one tackle for the St. Francis football team (11-1), which lost 45-14 to Marian in the NAIA National Semifinals.
  • The Wabash football team (12-1) lost 38-7 to St. Thomas, Minnesota, in the NCAA Division III National Tournament, ending the junior season for starting center Kyle Stucker.
  • The IU-Southeast women’s basketball team (3-5) lost 70-58 to Berea. Michaela Harris had two points (1 for 2), five rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot in 33 minutes.
  • IUPUI’s John Hubler played four minutes in the 3-7 Jaguars’ 80-53 loss to Purdue and had one steal.
  • The Eastern Michigan gymnasts defeated Michigan in an exhibition meet. Kim Ebeyer was fifth of 12 in the vault and ninth of 12 on the balance beam.

CENTER GROVE

  • Ball State’s Jake Eckert, swimming at the Eastern Michigan Invitational, was 10th of 19 in the 200 butterfly (1:55.64), sixth of 11 in the 400 IM (4:16.90), 12th of 29 in the 100 butterfly (52.37), 16th of 28 in the 200 IM (2:00.73) and 41st of 48 in the 50 freestyle (23.14).
  • Arizona’s Emma Schoettmer, competing at the Texas Swimming Relays, was third of 28 in the 200 breaststroke (2:10.19), eighth of 28 in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.05), and 30th of 32 in the 200 IM (2:05.35).
  • Ball State’s Kaiti Sullivan was 16th of 23 in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.42) and 17th of 22 in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.00) at the Miami Swimming Invitational. In the men’s event’s, Miami’s Chase Bettner was 10th of 20 in the 100 butterfly (51.54), 16th of 18 in the 200 butterfly (2:00.69), 20th of 27 in the 100 freestyle (47.31), 26th of 27 in the 200 freestyle (1:46.14) and 26th of 26 in the 500 freestyle (4:56.75).
  • The DePauw and Kenyon women participated in the Kenyon Total Performance Swimming Invitational. DePauw’s Abby Sheehan was 25th of 30 in the 100 backstroke (1:02.07) and 30th of 30 in the 100 freestyle (56.00). Kenyon’s Haley Townsend was 15th of 27 in the 200 butterfly (2:07.67) and 10th of 30 in the 100 butterfly (57.19).
  • Cincinnati swimmer Caroline Sheehan competed in 10 individual events in a dual meet (The Hoosierland Invitational) against Indiana. Her best events were a fifth-place finish in the 100 butterfly (57.55), a 12th-place finish in a field of 27 in the 50 freestyle (27.68) and an eighth-place finish in a field of 18 in the 100 freestyle (51.98).
  • Eastern Kentucky football player Bryce Krebs was named to the All-Ohio Valley Conference Second Team. The senior started in all 47 games for EKU in his four years on the team.
  • In an indoor track and field meet with Xavier, IPFW, Butler and Oakland, Ball State’s Jordan Timmons won the women’s mile in 5:29.46.
  • Competing in her first collegiate track and field competition, Davidson’s Tori Long was fourth of 17 in the 500-meter race (1:20.00) and 34th of 63 in the 300 meters (43.67) at the JDL Kickoff Classic.
  • Indianapolis’ Casey Wendorff was ninth of 18 in the mile (4:52.97) at the University of Indianapolis Track and Field Opener.
  • The IPFW men’s basketball team (7-3) defeated California Poly 75-73 and lost 96-79 to Utah. Joe Reed had 11 points (4 for 5, 0 for 1, 3 for 4), two rebounds and one assist in 26 minutes in the win and 14 points (6 for 11, 2 for 5, 0 for 0), five rebounds and one steal in 24 minutes against Utah.
  • Joey Lankey had one steal in eight minutes for the Wabash basketball team (4-3, 0-2) in a 59-50 loss to Oberlin.
  • The Indiana Wesleyan basketball team (8-1, 2-1) defeated Spring Arbor 91-71 and Huntington 91-60. Jonny Marlin had a team-high 18 points (6 for 9, 6 for 7, 0 for 0), two rebounds, one steal and six assists in 29 minutes against Spring Arbor and nine points (4 for 9, 1 for 4, 0 for 0), seven rebounds and five assists in 31 minutes against Huntington.
  • The Ancilla basketball team (7-3) defeated the St. Francis junior varsity 84-81 and Don Bosco Prep 83-72. Anderson McCoy had 16 points (4 for 9, 3 for 6, 5 for 7), two rebounds and two assists in the two wins.
  • The Anderson women’s basketball team (3-4, 2-0) defeated Mount St. Joseph 77-69 and Earlham 80-71. Shelby Shaffer had 10 points (2 for 9, 0 for 2, 6 for 12), five rebounds, a team-high eight assists and two steals in 35 minutes against Mount St. Joseph and 16 points (2 for 8, 1 for 2, 11 for 15), three rebounds, two steals, one blocked shot and a team-high five assists in 27 minutes against Earlham.
  • The Oberlin women’s basketball team (5-4) lost 64-46 to Denison and 73-64 to Carnegie-Mellon. Katie Lucaites played a total of 31 minutes in the two games and had two points (1 for 2), two assists, two steals and two rebounds.
  • The Manchester women’s basketball team (2-3, 1-1) lost 68-47 to Defiance and defeated Hanover 76-70. Kelcey Daugherty had six points (2 for 8, 0 for 0, 2 for 2), two rebounds, one assist and two blocked shots in 24 minutes in the loss and six points (1 for 6,1 for 4, 3 for 4), three rebounds, three assists, two steals and one blocked shot in 32 minutes in the win.
  • The Indiana State women’s basketball team (3-6) lost 68-43 to IUPUI and won 67-63 against Tulsa. Regan Wentland played 30 minutes in the two games and had three points (1 for 2, 1 for 1, 0 for 0), one rebound, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

EDINBURGH

  • The Elmhurst men’s basketball team (6-1) defeated Adrian 82-50 and Albion 77-54. Kyle Wuest had 15 points (4 for 7, 3 for 6, 4 for 4) and two rebounds in 21 minutes against Adrian and five points (2 for 7, 1 for 1, 0 for 0), five rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot in 25 minutes against Albion.

FRANKLIN

  • The St. Mary-of-the-Woods basketball team (5-3) won 112-73 against Robert Morris-Peoria. Tara Parmer had five points (2 for 12, 1 for 8, 0 for 0), a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in 21 minutes.
  • The Ancilla men’s basketball team (7-3) defeated the St. Francis JV 84-81 and Don Bosco Prep 83-72. Dylan Phair totaled 11 points (3 for 10, 0 for 3, 5 for 6), six rebounds and three assists in the two wins.
  • Indianapolis wrestler D. J. Smith won four matches and lost one at 125 pounds to finish in third place at the four-team Little State Tournament.
  • In a dual swimming meet with Cincinnati, Indiana’s Adam Destrampe was fourth of 19 in the 500 freestyle (4:24.21), fifth of 17 in the 200 freestyle (1:39.73) and a member of the winning 800 freestyle relay team.
  • DePauw swimmer Alex Grissom was 12th of 53 in the 500 freestyle (4:32.74) and 19th of 57 in the 100 freestyle (47.82) at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College.

INDIAN CREEK

  • The Marian football team (11-2) gave St. Francis its first defeat of the season, 45-14, and will play for the NAIA National Championship on Dec. 19 in Daytona Beach, Florida. Brenden Smith forced a fumble on a second-quarter kickoff and recovered it, and had one solo tackle and assisted on three others for the Knights.
  • Ally Lehman had team highs of 12 rebounds and 14 points (6 for 10, 0 for 1, 2 for 2) and added four assists, two blocked shots and one steal in 36 minutes for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team (3-3) in a 73-58 loss to Milwaukee.

GREENWOOD

The Hanover men’s basketball team (2-4, 1-0) lost 84-80 to Centre and won 82-64 against Manchester. Jaren Hornbeak had one rebound and one blocked shot in 13 minutes in the two games.
