Court numbers clarification

The number of court cases filed and how they were resolved included both civil and criminal cases. Cases dismissed, which was 18 percent of the total cases, include both criminal and civil cases, such as small claims cases, and can be dismissed for multiple reasons.

The data was provided by the Indiana Supreme Court in the Indiana Judicial Service Report.

A separate analysis by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office showed that less than 4 percent of criminal cases were dismissed during a recent several months-long time period.

Defendants charged with a crime can in some cases choose to plead guilty to certain charges in exchange for a recommended sentence by the prosecutor’s office or with no recommendation and leave the sentencing decision up to a judge.
