Franklin students return from Japan

Fourteen Franklin students recently returned from a nearly two-week trip to Japan.

Students from Franklin Community High School and Franklin Community Middle School ate authentic Japanese food, learned about Japanese culture, and visited museums, national landmarks and the home and church of a Franklin native who helped establish Franklin as Kuji’s sister city in 1960.

While in Kuji, the Franklin students stayed with host families, took a judo class and visited the public schools. Two Franklin College graduates, who live in Kuji and teach English classes, served as tour guides for the students while they were in town.

This is the first time in recent years that Franklin students have been able to visit Kuji, Franklin’s sister city. Kuji students typically visit Franklin annually.

This year, the Franklin Rotary gave $7,500 toward sending students overseas, and local groups, including the city of Franklin, Grace United Methodist Church and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Climate Control, each donated $1,500 toward the trip.
