Shirley Ann Burks

NEW WHITELAND

Shirley Ann (Carter) Burks, 79, passed away at her residence in New Whiteland on Tuesday Oct. 6, 2015, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born Oct. 5, 1936, in Tompkinsville, Monroe County, Kentucky, to the late Sam H. and Onie L. (Strode) Carter.

She married Lowell Dewayne Burks on Nov. 19, 1957; and they were married for 56 years.

Shirley was employed with Clark-Pleasant Community School Corp. as a bus driver for more than 20 years, retiring in 2003.

She was a member of the Red Hat Society and New Whiteland Baptist Church.

She bowled for many years in the Franklin Bowling League and was a co-founder of the Whiteland Lassie League. She coached and played softball for several years.

Survivors include two daughters, Carla (Don) Phelps and Pam Farr, both of New Whiteland; a sister, Joyce Hume of Tompkinsville, Kentucky; two brothers, Kenneth Carter and Louis (Betty Jo) Carter, both of Tompkinsville; four grandchildren, Kim (Daniel) Humston, Kevin Phelps, Matt (Leni) Farr and Jena Farr; and four great-grandchildren, Tyler Powers, Aubrey Humston, Carter Humston and Ariane Santana.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lowell Burks; an infant daughter, Deborah Burks; and two brothers, Charles Carter and Bill Carter.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 U.S. 31 North. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
