Man, woman injured in motorcycle crash

Two people were severely injured and are in Indianapolis hospitals after a motorcycle went off the road.

Four people were riding motorcycles at 2:30 p.m. Sunday near Trafalgar. One motorcycle with a man and a woman on it veered off County Road 500W near Trafalgar. Two other friends were driving their motorcycles in front of the motorcycle that veered off the road but did not notice the accident. When they stopped at a nearby intersection, they noticed the other motorcycle was gone and turned around to find them, according to the police report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

They found Robert Rupe, 62, Beech Grove, who had been driving, stuck underneath the motorcycle. His passenger Colleen Mennel, 36, Greenwood, was unresponsive, the report said.

Mennel was flown by medical helicopter to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was in stable condition Monday morning.

Rupe was taken to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis. He was in fair condition Monday morning.

Rupe and Mennel had met hours earlier at a restaurant in Trafalgar, according to the police report. As is standard in serious crashes, police got a search warrant to test Rupe’s blood for alcohol or any other substances.
