James Phillip Barton Jr

James Phillip Barton, Jr., 72, of Greenwood, passed away Friday, Sept. 11, 2015 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.

He was born April 11, 1943 in Indianapolis to James P. Barton and Mary L. (Fahrner) Barton.

He married Sandra (Putnam) on Oct. 10, 1964 at the Greenwood United Methodist Church, she survives. He was a 1961 graduate of Center Grove High School and attended Purdue University. He started his professional career in land surveying in 1964 for the John C. Ryan Company in Indianapolis. He obtained his professional license as a land surveyor in 1975 and later became owner of the company in 1977 and operated the company until the spring of 2015. He enjoyed reading and working on cars.

He was a proud Center Grove Marching Band parent supporter. He also enjoyed baking, cooking, and attending multiple sporting events of his children and grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years Sandra (Putnam) Barton of Greenwood; children, Scott Barton (Jill) of Greenwood, Jennifer Barton of Greenville, South Carolina and Matthew Barton (Mallory Distler) of Berlin, Maryland; two grandchildren, Andrew Barton and Sydney Barton; a brother, Robert Barton (Rebecca) of Indianapolis; a sister, Nancy Barton (Robert Sander) of Indianapolis, and multiple nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James P. Barton, Sr. (Reba-deceased) and Mary L. (Fahrner) Barton.

A memorial service will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday  at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center 300 S.Morton Street (U.S. 31 South) in Franklin with the family receiving friends from 4 p.m. until service time. A reception will immediately follow at the mortuary for family and friends.
