College update – September 5

Jess Admire, a two-time Daily Journal Johnson County Volleyball Player of the Year, started her college career at Butler by being named to the All-Tournament Team in the Rumble in the Rockies Tournament at Laramie, Wyoming, the only Butler player to receive the honor.

The freshman from Franklin Community High School hit for an .846 average, converting 12 kills in 13 attempts, and added two blocks and one dig in a 3-0 defeat of South Dakota in the season-opener. In a 3-1 loss to the host Cowboys of Wyoming, she had 11 kills, five digs and three blocks. She added one kill in a 3-0 loss to Ohio State.

Franklin

Karissa Wentzell had five digs in four games for the Anderson volleyball team (0-1) in a 3-1 loss to Goshen.Nick Cataldi started and took one shot for the Aurora men’s soccer team (0-1) in a 2-1 loss to Augustana.Center GroveFranklin’s Jessica Silva assisted on each goal in the Grizzlies’ 2-0 season-opening women’s soccer defeat of Fontbonne.

Helena Bomber started for the Rose-Hulman women’s soccer team (0-1) in a 4-0 loss to Centre.

Desi Golden was in the starting lineup for the St. Catherine, Kentucky, women’s soccer team in a season-opening 1-0 loss to Freed-Hardeman.

Hannah Johnson saw action as a substitute for the Indiana University women’s soccer team (2-1-1) in 1-0 wins against Missouri and Baylor in West Lafayette at the Boilermakers Challenge Cup.

In the season-opener for the DePauw men’s soccer team, Alieu Musa assisted on the only goal in a 1-0 defeat of Hanover.

The Drake men’s soccer team (1-1) defeated Pacific 2-1 and lost 1-0 to Green Bay. Gabe Edel started for the Bulldogs in the win and assisted on the first Drake goal, tying the score at 1-1. He took three shots in the match, one on goal. The sophomore took one shot on goal in the loss to Green Bay.

The Marian men’s soccer team (0-2) lost 2-1 to both Calumet-St. Joseph and Mount Mercy. Dalton Mudd was in the goal for the Knights in the loss to Calumet-St. Joseph and had four saves. Bradley Bennett played as a substitute in both matches.

Competing at the Marian Doubles Tournament, Marian’s Emily Bueno and her partner won three matches and the title in the “D” flight, defeating St. Francis 8-3, Grace 8-3, and Taylor 8-5. The Knights’ Grace Neathery, competing in the “B’ flight, defeated Taylor 8-6 and St. Francis 8-2 before losing in the finals 8-4 to another Marian team.

Illinois State’s volleyball team won its first match at Miami’s Hurricane Classic, defeating Florida A&M 3-0, but then lost 3-0 to Miami and 3-2 to Kansas State. Ali Line had one kill and one block in the win and did not play in the other matches.

The Taylor volley ball team (0-4) lost 3-0 to Grandview, 3-1 to Northwest College, 3-0 to Dordt, and 3-1 to Doane. Jessi Arbuckle played in 11 games in the four matches and had 12 digs, one service ace and one kill.

urghEmily Roberts won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles in Franklin’s 8-1 tennis win against Asbury.

Indian Creek

Brenden Smith assisted on one tackle for the No. 1 ranked Marian football team in a 45-13 defeat of No. 4 St. Xavier.Olivet Nazarene quarterback Matthew Wray completed 2 of 6 passes for seven yards and was intercepted three times in a 27-21 defeat of Midland.Marian’s Taylor Kinney and his partner won their first two matches in flight “B” of the Marian doubles tennis tournament before losing in the finals.

Greenwood

The Point Park volleyball team (0-8) lost 3-1 to Indiana Tech, 3-0 to Lindsey Wilson, 3-0 to St. Catherine and 3-0 to Grace. Morgan Dangelo played in the first two matches and had 14 digs and one assist.Katie Walsh won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles and lost 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles in IU-Southeast’s 6-3 women’s tennis loss to Hanover.

ndAlexa West finished fourth for third-place Marian with scores of 86-84-170 at the six-team Midwest Collegiate Open Golf Tournament.
