Charity softball game to help leukemia patient

Greenwood Little League will host a charity softball event to help support a local teen diagnosed with leukemia.

The Cooper Davis Charity Softball Games will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Little League fields, 320 S. Washington St., Greenwood.

All proceeds will go to support the Davis family. Cooper Davis, 13, is in the middle of treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

“Our goal was to pull as many people that we could touch who had anything to do with baseball and softball, have a daylong event, and generate some money and awareness for what’s going on,” organizer Jim Gray said.

Teams will be divided into four divisions: youth for ages 10 to 15, recreational, semi-competitive and competitive. All divisions are coed.

Each team will play a minimum of two games, with the best ones moving on in the tournament. Registration is $100 per team or $10 for an individual.

In addition to the games, organizers have lined up a bake sale, concession stand sales and gift basket raffles to support the family. They also will sell “Cooper’s Troopers” T-shirts and bracelets.

Even if people aren’t playing, they can help the cause, Gray said.

“We made it easy to come out and have a community event, watch some people play softball and just support a local family,” he said.
