Police search for slaying suspect

Police are investigating a death in a Greenwood apartment complex and are searching for a man seen running from the scene.

Shots had been fired, police said.

Officers were called to Park Greenwood Apartments, just off U.S. 31 south of Fry Road, at 3:40 p.m. Friday. Police found a man dead inside an apartment in the 700 block of Wooddale Terrace but did not know how he was killed as of Friday night, Greenwood Assistant Police Chief Matt Fillenwarth said. His name was not released.

Witnesses saw a man wearing plaid shorts and white tennis shoes who was carrying a bag run north away from the apartment, Fillenwarth said.

Police said they believe the man left a baseball cap in front of the apartment where the man was found dead.

The coroner and prosecutor’s offices were at the scene to aid in the investigation. The prosecutor’s office had secured a search warrant for the apartment and police expected to be investigating at the scene into late Friday.

The incident happened at Park Greenwood Apartments. Residents said the apartment complex had hired a security officer to patrol the grounds. The security guard and apartment employees declined to comment.

Debra MaGee, who lives in the building where the death occurred, didn’t notice anything unusual at the time of the shooting. She said construction, including replacing roofs of nearby apartment buildings, could have drowned out the sound of any gunshots.

The first sign that the anything had happened was when she heard a police car screech to a halt in front of the building, MaGee said.

Resident Darlene Harrison noticed emergency responders coming through the neighborhood and immediately knew something had happened, she said.

“I had seen police cars zooming through here, and I thought, ‘That’s very unusual,’” Harrison said. “You see them here a lot but not going like that, and I saw the firetruck and the ambulance.”
