Celebrate the season — while it lasts

Just a few weeks remain of the summer season so you’ve got time to enjoy some warm days before the leaves start to change colors next month. The Indianapolis Museum of Art is offering multiple free events and programs through the end of the month that will combine creative pursuits with nature appreciation. Here’s the lineup:

Hummingbird Banding: Catch & Release

When: 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Aug. 22.

What: Learn how to attract hummingbirds to your yard and watch as nationally certified bird-banders catch, band and release the birds. This event is sponsored by the IMA Horticultural Society.

Grown-Up Summer Camp

When: Aug. 28 and 29.

What: A weekend-long art adventure, including urban camping on the grounds of the IMA. Campers will work closely with artists, chefs, musicians and curators throughout the immersive and personalized camp experience.

Temporary Suburban Opening

When: 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 28.

What: As an extension of the museum’s current exhibition, “Michelle Grabner: Weaving Life into Art,” the IMA will host The Temporary Suburban, an alternative art space in the park. During four consecutive weekends from Aug. 28 through Sept. 20, the 10-square-foot structure will feature solo exhibitions from four local artists.

Cost: Event is free and open to the public.

Public Conversation with Michelle Grabner

When: 2 p.m. Aug. 29.

What: Join the IMA’s curator of contemporary art, Tricia Y. Paik, for an outdoor conversation with artist Michelle Grabner near The Temporary Suburban in the park.

Cost: Event is free and open to the public.

An Herbal Lifestyle

When: Aug. 29, 1 to 2:30 p.m.

What: Carolee Snyder, an herbalist and owner of Carolee’s Herb Farm, will lead a class consisting of cooking, crafts and ideas to inspire participants to incorporate herbs into their daily lives. Snyder will provide recipes and handouts to all participants. Class is limited to 35 participants, and preregistration is required. Call 955-2339 to register.
