Donald Wayne Lucas, 79, died peacefully at home on Friday, Aug. 14, 2015. He was a resident of Franklin.

He is survived by his wife, Donna (Johnson) Lucas; two children, Richard (Christina) Lucas of Greenwood and Deborah (Nick) Dowden of Bargersville; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Glenn) Shonk; and one brother, Dale (Karen) Lucas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Elno Lucas; and his mother, R. Madge (Mitten) Lucas.

Don graduated from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, where he served as a member of their board of advisers. He was a licensed professional engineer and licensed land surveyor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Don spent most of his career (42 years) working with the Indiana Department of Transportation. He also worked for the Indiana-based Heritage Group.

He served as a member of various national organizations, AASHTO, NQL, TRB, FWHA, SHRP and Franklin Rotary.

Don received various awards and honors during his career, including the Thomas H. MacDonald Memorial Award for outstanding service in highways, Governor’s top “Sagamore of the Wabash” Award, Indiana General Assembly Resolution for Highway Construction and Maintenance, Honorary “Aggie” Award by the Indiana Mineral Aggregate Association, the Director’s Trophy plus honorary life membership by the Indiana Constructors Inc., Award of Merit by the Asphalt Association of Indiana, Honorary Lieutenant Colonel by the Indiana State Police Department, Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers and Rotary Paul Harris Award.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church of Franklin, 1300 E. Adams Drive, officiated by Pastor Andy Kinsey. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Flinn & Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Military honors will be conducted by the Franklin American Legion Post No. 205 at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Mr. Lucas to Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1300 E. Adams Drive, Franklin, IN 46131; or Indiana State Transportation Workers Foundation Inc., 7260 Shadeland Station, Indianapolis, IN 46256.
