School district to donate land for Franklin trail

The Franklin school district plans to donate a small portion of land to the city to construct a new trail along Eastview Drive.

The city has worked on acquiring about 5 acres of land along Eastview Drive, Commerce Drive and Arvin Drive to build a 3.5-mile trail that would connect residents from downtown and the east side to U.S. 31 and Franklin Community High School.

City officials plan to install the trail next year but needed a small piece of property from the school district near Needham and Webb elementary schools near Eastview Drive.

The assessed value for the .04-acre property was estimated at $500. School board president William Maschmeyer said the city would not need to pay for the land.

The city council and school board will have a joint meeting Aug. 24, where officials plan to give final approval to the donation.
