Local woman bilked through Facebook scam

A Nineveh woman lost $861 in a scam after a friend’s social media account was hacked.

On Saturday, a Facebook friend messaged the woman, notifying her she had been selected, along with him, as a $30,000 winner in a lottery.

She was told that, in order to receive her winnings, she needed to wire $850 to a man in Chicago. She sent the money, plus fees. When she hadn’t received her winnings Monday, she contacted the person again, who said she needed to send another $950, and she would receive $90,000, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman then called the friend who had originally messaged her and found out his Facebook account had been hacked, and he had not been sending her messages, the report said.

She called police and told them she was still receiving messages, trying to persuade her to send more money.
