Traffic shift coming to I-65

This weekend, be prepared for a big shift in traffic on Interstate 65.

Two southbound lanes, between Southport Road and Greenwood, will shift to the other side of the interstate. One southbound lane will stay on that side of I-65 so motorists can still reach exits, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The shift will put five travel lanes on the northbound side of the interstate, leaving three lanes open for northbound traffic.

The shift is planned to begin tonight, and will continue for six to eight weeks, the release said.

Moving traffic to the other side of the interstate is needed so workers can remove pavement and reconstruct the road. The work is part of a $35.9 million project to add another lane in each direction of I-65 between Southport Road and Main Street in Greenwood.

Work is also beginning on another project to add a lane in each direction between Greenwood and Franklin, the release said.
