Ready for a smokin’ good time?

Franklin’s annual Smoke on the Square barbecue competition will give champion barbecue specialists and locals a chance to savor some sweet flavors next week.

Teams from across the Midwest will gather to compete in the Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned competition from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 26 and 27 on the square in downtown Franklin.

Professional barbecue teams will compete for a chance to be named grand champion and earn their share of $6,000 in prize money. The teams will arrive Friday during a concert featuring the Blue River Band from 5 to 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Woomblies will play from 7 to 10 p.m. A free classic car cruise-in will take place on North Main Street starting at 5 p.m.

The People’s Choice competition will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. The public can purchase a $7 ticket to sample pulled pork from nine professional teams and vote for their favorite.
