Driver arrested after chase through yards, up I-65

A man was arrested near Franklin after a police chase that began in Taylorsville.

Dewayne Thomas, 42, 3489 Rensleer Place, North Vernon, was driving through Taylorsville when a Bartholomew County sheriff’s deputy tried to stop him about 11 p.m. Thursday. The vehicle was registered to someone other than Thomas, who is wanted in Jennings County.

Once the officer turned on his lights, Thomas sped off, driving north on U.S. 31, speeding and driving through residents’ yards, according to a news release from the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office.

An Edinburgh police officer tried to stop him, and both the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Franklin Police Department were called to help as Thomas got onto Interstate 65, heading north. Police put stop sticks on the interstate near the Franklin exit. His car sped off the highway, headed east and went into a nearby field.

Thomas and a 17-year-old girl inside the vehicle ran from the truck, but officers and a police dog caught them minutes later.

Thomas is in the Bartholomew County jail on $67,000 bond. He had a warrant in Bartholomew County on probation violation and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle charges from a prior incident. The girl was taken to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center.
