American Legion post schedules disposal ceremony for holiday

Daily Journal staff reports

In honor of Flag Day, American Legion Post 205, at 1200 Park Ave. in Franklin, will have a flag disposal ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Here is what you need to know about the event, according to Dave Rook, past commander adjutant.

What will the ceremony be like?

Officers will speak, the flags are lit, a rifle volley will be fired and taps will be played.

Can I have my flag disposed of?

People can bring flags out prior to the ceremony. They will be accepted today at the American Legion post. The post also has bins set out year-round that collect flags that need disposed of.

Why is disposing of the flags important?

Flags shouldn’t just be wadded up and thrown in the garbage. The flag represents what the United States stands for.

How long have you been doing this event?

We do it every year on Flag Day. Some do it on Veterans Day or Independence Day.
