BANQUET TIME

Once again, it’s time to honor Johnson County’s finest high school athletes.

On June 19, the top 24 senior athletes from the county’s six public high schools will be recognized during the 17th annual Johnson County Athlete of the Year Banquet at Franklin College.

Sponsored by the Daily Journal and the Johnson County athletics directors, the event honors male and female athletes for excellence in athletics and sportsmanship.

Each school selects a male and female Athlete of the Year from their respective school. An overall male and female winner then are selected by the Daily Journal sports staff.

Each school also selects a male and female winner for Outstanding Sportsmanship awards.

All Athlete of the Year and Outstanding Sportsmanship winners will be recognized individually at the banquet.

This year’s male Athlete of the Year winners are: Devon Hensley, Center Grove; Elijah Parmer, Edinburgh; Jake Stevenson, Franklin; Joe Sheryak, Greenwood; Braxton Zachery, Indian Creek; and Brandon Benson, Whiteland.

This year’s female Athlete of the Year winners are: Ali Line, Center Grove; Courtney Woodall, Edinburgh; Jess Admire, Franklin; Morgan Dangelo, Greenwood; Emma Russell, Indian Creek; and Monica Collins, Whiteland.

This year’s male Outstanding Sportsmanship winners are: Zach Hart, Center Grove; Eric Cravens, Edinburgh; Clayton Culp, Franklin; Paul Proctor, Greenwood; Dokken Egenolf, Indian Creek; and Landry Long, Whiteland.

This year’s female Outstanding Sportsmanship winners are: Tori Long, Center Grove; Mariah Brown, Edinburgh; Lexi Elliott, Franklin; Madeline Wolf, Greenwood; Kaitlin Smith, Indian Creek; and Kaylee McCracken, Whiteland.

This year’s guest speaker is Roger Schroder, a member of the legendary 1954 Milan High School state championship basketball team. A Franklin College graduate, he is an Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame member who coached basketball for 31 years in the Indianapolis Public Schools system.

Schroder lettered in three sports at Franklin College. He was the head varsity coach at Marshall High School for 19 years and served three years as head coach at Broad Ripple High School before retiring.

The banquet is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased for $16 at any of the county’s public high schools.

When: June 9; social time is at 6:30 p.m.; dinner is at 7 p.m.

Where: Branigin Room, Franklin College campus center on South Forsythe Street

Cost: $16 per ticket. The event is open to the public. Tickets can be purchased at any of the county’s six public high schools.

Guest speaker: Roger Schroder, a Franklin College graduate and member of the legendary 1954 Milan state championship basketball team. A longtime varsity basketball coach in the Indianapolis Public Schools system, he is a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
