Whiteland high school evacuated when gas line hit

Students at Whiteland Community High School had to evacuate the building Tuesday after a construction crew hit a gas line nearby.

Construction crews are working on the north and west sides of the high school, and a worker driving a backhoe dug into the ground and hit a gas line.

School officials were notified and students evacuated the building around 1:15 p.m. After about 10 minutes, the gas was shut off to the high school and students were allowed back into the building, director of curriculum Cameron Rains said.

No one was injured.

Construction crews have been updating the school’s football stadium, band practice field, concession stand, locker room and training facility which should be done this fall. A notice about the gas leak was sent home to parents Tuesday afternoon, Rains said.
