Trojans win golf tournament

The third-ranked Center Grove Trojans charged to the front and stayed in front in winning Saturday’s Rock Hollow Hall of Fame Boys Golf Tournament in Peru.

Firing a tournament-record team score of 292, the Trojans were led by sophomore Ethan Shepherd, who shot an even-par 72.

Center Grove seniors C.J. Heck and Zack Carrabine finished with a 73 and 74, respectively. Junior Tyler Rankel carded a 78.

Finishing second, 11 strokes back with a team score of 303, was No. 4 Carmel, led by tournament medalist Kevin Stone, who had a 71.

Franklin was 15th among the 18 teams with a 346. The Grizzly Cubs were led by senior Blake Andrews, who finished with an 83.

Franklin women win

The Franklin College women’s track and field team set two meet records in winning Saturday’s Indiana Division III Championship at DePauw University.

Franklin senior Anna Murdock, an Indian Creek graduate, was named the Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete of the meet.

The Grizzlies won seven events to win the outdoor meet. Murdock picked up two victories. She set the meet record by winning the 1,500-meter run (4:43.09).

Murdock also finished first in the 800 (2:20.88).

Franklin’s 400 relay team also set a meet record in winning the race (51.02 seconds).

Senior Rachel Lucas edged out DePauw’s Odessa Fernandes by a half-second to win the 400-meter dash (1:01.40). Classmate Natavia Howell won the 100-meter dash (12.54 seconds).

Sophomore Erica Christy, a Greenwood graduate, won the shot put (37 feet, 11.25 inches). And junior Kasey King rounded out Franklin’s event winners with a first place in the javelin (110 feet, 6 inches).

Junior Ashley Myers, an Edinburgh graduate, was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:11.21).
