Franklin professor to talk about Islamic State

Franklin College philosophy and religion professor David Carlson will give a public lecture next week about the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The lecture will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Community Congregational Church, 4592 N. Hurricane Road, Franklin.

The lecture, titled “What Americans Need to Know about ISIL,” will be free and open to the public.

Carlson will provide a brief historical background on how events in the Middle East since 1978, including American involvement in Iraq and the Syrian War, helped create an environment allowing ISIL to flourish.

Also among the topics of discussion will be steps nations, including the United States, could potentially take in the region.
